Music Magazine!

I've already started with the music magazine! Went out and shot some photos with a friend today who is looking to become a full time music producer, so I thought, I can get some photos for media, and he can have some for creating a profile for himself! Just one, quick edit!

Notes on fonts and Magazine styles

1.) Deconstruction of 3 original texts using media terms
2.) Blog the conventions you want to include in your school magazine
3.) Research any print terms we are unsure of. Break it down to component parts.

Font
Serif/Times New Roman
Past/tradition

Sans Serif - many different ones
Handwriting font - personal, addressing the reader, directed at you

Fits tone or mood of the magazine

All the other types of fonts

Banner/masthead -Generally the title, more newspaper aimed

Cell lines on the front cover also, the pieces of information around the side of the magazines that sell the magazine to the person

Bursts, makes it look more exciting, to intrigue the reader

Menu bar, advertises other things which happen in the magazine, always at the bottom, all in a Sans Serif font, because it appears modern

Blue line - barcode, price, issue, date etc

Capital letters, portrays shouting

Pages in the Magazine

Callout - Take a quotation, put it in the middle of the column and make it bigger

Copy - what you call the article

Images - camera shots used in moving image all translate into print also

Black and White - old fashioned, classical an timeless, upmarket magazine

Three colour colour scheme, any more will look too busy and cluttered

Two types of magazine front cover - 1 is busy and cluttered, attracts the reader because they think is it full of information and it is good value for money. 2 is simple and clean, minimalistic look, sophisticated and they are clearly organised, they do not need to put everything on the front cover, secure target audience.

Exam boards do not specify target audience of out magazine!Eg Students, parent, both etc.

Magazine Deconstruction

This is my first piece of work towards the preliminary task. I will be deconstruction a real magazine and a student made magazine.

The two magazines I have chosen are The Hampton Boys School magazine and a student made magazine called The Griffin. The Hampton magazine has a bright attractive title sideways, making the reader want to see what it says. The photos used show a performance of Les Miserables. There is a main photo at the top, with three other photos scattered around. This gives the readers just a glimpse of what went on on the production. A section of text is underneath it, which maybe is a bit too small and there is a bit too much crammed in. There is a mini contents page just to let the reader know what is going to be in the issue. There is also the school website link and the logo of the school. It gives enough information for the reader to know enough about the school. The target audience is parents of the students but also people who may be looking at sending their child to the school.

The Griffin on the other hand is a magazine created by a student. From the the start, we can tell that this magazine is poor. Firstly, the font looks cheap and childish, and the black text on the purple banner at the top is very hard to read and uneasy on the eye. The overall size of the font is small, and there are blank spaces on the magazine which could be filled with more information or they could make the font bigger. The “Free” sticker looks cheap, and it is peeling off which makes it look like it has been put on without care and attention. There is a logo of the school at the bottom left hand corner, which represents it but we do not know what school it is actually from. The only image is of a male and female student in smart clothing, but it is a very cheesy photo, and the positions they are in look forced and like they have been modeled. There is nothing else to look at on the cover really; text and an image or two are the two fundamentals.

So, I will be uploading some of my photos, some of my plans and thoughts, and the projects themselves.
Thanks for looking and I hope you enjoy browsing my work!
